About This 1895 Victorian For Auction In Martin Tennessee
A landmark of historic downtown Martin, this beautiful, Victorian style home was constructed by Vowell Brothers Construction in 1894 and completed the following year (1895) for Dr. Charles M. Sebastian. Dr. Sebastian arrived in Weakley County, Tennessee shortly after receiving his medical degree from Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky in 1871. Upon his arrival, Dr. Sebastian purchased 3 ½ acres from William Martin and constructed a Greek Revival style house.
In January 1894, the Doctor’s Greek Revival Residence was destroyed by fire. After clearing the debris, Dr. Sebastian hired local carpenters to construct this fashionable, Victorian style residence using walnut, cherry, and yellow poplar from the local river bottoms. During the construction of the house, a son was born to Doctor & Mrs. Sebastian, following seven girls. In honor of his first son, Ivan, Dr. Sebastian named the family home, Ivandale.
Ivandale, located on a large, gently rolling lot on McCombs Street, is a two-and-a-half story, Queen Anne style framed house. The house is supported with a full brick foundation with decorative metal vents. A variety of wall coverings include weatherboarding, vertical wood siding, fish-scale shingles, and high-relief beaded board wood siding. Most windows in Ivandale are straight topped with plate glass in both the upper and lower sash with all windows having simple wooden surrounds. Additionally, there are four, tall brick interior chimneys with two flues that service the upstairs and downstairs fireplaces.
Ivandale’s interior features a vast two-story floor plan that includes a breathtaking foyer that plays host as the centerpiece of this home’s masterful layout that perfectly connects the upstairs, downstairs, and each of its wonderfully crafted rooms. The downstairs includes the kitchen, dining room, living room, parlor, laundry room, and master bedroom/bathroom. The upstairs consists of a secondary foyer that seamlessly connects three additional bedrooms and the second bathroom.
The house offers a variety of richly decorative architectural elements, with the most prominent being a polygonal, three-story tower with tent roofing. Other elements include grandeur high ceilings, an in-ground pool, and wrought-iron fencing with gate access that surrounds this historic home.
Structurally the house has undergone minor alterations, is in excellent condition, and retains its original interior woodwork and exterior architectural trim. It is located downtown and is classified as a part of Historical Martin.
