About This 1900 Victorian For Sale In Burkesville Kentucky

This grand 1900 Victorian home is rich in history, uncommon design, and craftsmanship. The builder and original owner, Gid Alexander, was a timber merchant with access to the finest lumber, choosing yellow poplar for this Kentucky Heritage Council Landmark Home. In 1898, Mr. Alexander saw a photo in Nashville of a home of this design that had recently been built in England. Upon his return to Kentucky, he cut timber and sent it down the Cumberland River on a barge to a Nashville mill for the unique, custom woodwork that makes this home such a cherished and admired landmark.

The same profiles of hand carved trim are combined throughout the home to create unique millwork designs in each room, including the dramatic diamond pattern trim that defines the showcase two story foyer. The silent butler from the original kitchen to the dining room is used today as a display space. The stone foundation, all walks, and fireplaces for the home were hand hewn from a hill near the home.

A unique design feature of this 7 bedroom 2 bath home is that the floor plans of the first and second floors are identical, with tall floor to ceiling windows forming architectural bays in many rooms. Each door leading into a hall or to the outside, boasts an elegant, original transom, once used for ventilation in summer months. The first floor now has two-zone central heat and air. The home retains its original stained glass windows and front door. Original hardwood floors and ceilings, and several original chandeliers, remain in place throughout the home.

Hand hewn ceiling beams in the den and brick fireplaces in the living room and den add to the charm of this home. A cupola, accessed from a third floor space, sits atop this grand home and grabs the attention of passersby from a distance. The craftsmanship of the front wraparound porch, cut stone underpinning, mature shade trees and the trickling sound of the nearby creek all beckon you to enter and explore this charming, grand home from another era.

This historic home, purchased by the owner in 1964 from a family member, has been publicized in newspaper articles and books, and featured in TV segments, with Avon modeling a fragrance bottle after the home. The owner and his sister were born in this home. Two of the owner’s daughters held their weddings against this stunning, historic backdrop. Folklore holds that stagecoach travelers were often welcomed in for short respite or a meal.

Some who love this home envision second floor renovations for a spectacular B&B for visitors to nearby Dale Hollow lake. Home is sold As Is Where Is. Some furniture, not all of the furniture shown in photos, included in the sale. Call today to schedule a showing of one of Kentucky’s most treasured historic properties.
