History:

The architect was Lansing C Holden. It was built as part of the Cyrus Field Estate in Ardsley Park. Amzi Barber was first resident. The mansion to the gate lodge burnt down. The Jaffray family lived in it after Barber until about 1959 when they sold it for $1 to the Hoppen family, presumably related to the Jaffrays. It was renovated it in 2002-2003, replacing all of the electrical and heating systems, re-plastering the horsehair plaster walls, and preserving the original fir floors.

The adorable 1960’s kitchen cabinets were moved down to the basement to make a craft room. The new addition has exposed tuckahoe marble walls, the same walls that clad the entire original exterior. St Patrick’s cathedral in Manhattan is made of this stone. The terra cotta tiles on the new addition were found on a church that was being demolished in Cincinnati.

The detached garage, built in 1995, has several lifetimes worth of extra tiles for repairs. These tiles are no longer made. They are different from ludowici and other tiles in that they are shaped like a true S and they are laid on a diagonal, lending extra charm to the house.
